This month’s Star Story comes from Anne Smith in Lincolnshire in the UK, who recently received an email from a dear friend she thought she’d never see again, now living some 10,000 miles away in Australia!
Anne, 53, explains:
“In February 1973 I started a State Registered Nursing Course at Grantham Hospital, in Grantham, Lincolnshire. There were about 12 of us in the group but one girl, Pam Spicer, became my best friend.
We went out for a drink together, went out for meals, shared secrets and generally had great fun!
In late 1973 I decided nursing was not the chosen career for me so I left. Pam stayed on and qualified. In time she moved and unfortunately we lost touch.
I too moved from Grantham to Peterborough and embarked upon a secretarial career.
I married in 1983 to a lovely man who was, at the time, in the RAF. We had a son, moved around, living in Stamford and a village near Nottingham, before finally settling back in Grantham.
Over the years I did of course wonder what had become of Pam and on returning back to Grantham, decided to look up her surname in the phone book.
There were several ‘Spicers’ so I never pursued it. After all, I didn’t want to phone the wrong number!
Then a couple of months ago I got an email from "Who-Remembers-Me" and thought, well, go for it, I have nothing to lose. So I registered and put in Pam's details, not thinking for one minute I would find her again.
A couple of days later I got an email from her; it was brilliant, such a wonderful surprise!
Apparently she had been registered with the site for about a year, had not been able to trace anyone she knew, then by chance checked again to see if anyone had registered recently and found me!
She has kept up her nursing and is now the equivalent of a ward sister, not here in the UK but 10,000 miles away near Adelaide in Australia! She too was married, has since divorced, and has two children in their teens.
We have emailed loads and sent each other photos; that’s me with my dog and that’s Pam in the other photo.
It has been such a wonderful experience to find her again! I can’t believe it’s been over 30 years, 1973, since we last saw each other!
As she lives on the other side of the world meeting up will be difficult, but she has said that maybe one day she will come back to England, perhaps when her children have finished their education.
We’ve had so much fun catching up; I’ve filled her in on all the gossip, told her all about Grantham Hospital, where we met (ironically I’m back at the hospital working in the news shop and I love it), and England in general.
If the opportunity ever arose we both agree that we would definitely meet up. She made me so happy in replying and it’s great to have contact with such a lovely person once again. Thank you so much for putting us back in touch.”
