Old footie fans back in touch!
This month’s STAR STORY comes from Pat Clements in Carmarthen, Wales, in the UK, who with our help was able to trace Olive, an old ‘footie’ friend she hasn’t seen in over forty years!
Pat, now 69, tells her story:
“I was just eight years old when I began pestering my Dad to take me with him to the local football match. ‘You will just be bored’ he insisted, but I insisted even more and eventually he gave in and took me!
From that day on I never missed a match until I was sixteen. I met up with some other youngsters including Olive, who was a couple of years older than me.
We became firm friends and sold programmes together to earn free entry to the match. They were great days!
A while later I passed the ‘eleven plus’ exam to go to the grammar school and was delighted to find that Olive went to the same school.
We spent all our spare time together and if it wasn’t football it was aeroplanes, another favourite pastime of ours!
One big moment of excitement was a trip to Wembley for the Amateur Cup Final. We didn’t go together but amazingly we did bump into each other as the crowds poured out after the match.
Finally we left school, went out to work and eventually married. Olive married a chap who worked with me and during those earlier years we still saw a lot of each other.
However, two children each later and things had changed, we had lost each other’s details.
I heard that she and her family had moved to the Channel Islands but back then I didn’t have any means of looking for her. So many times though I wondered, how she was.
Fast forward forty years and while sat at the computer one day I got to thinking.
I tried looking for Olive under her married name but no luck. Thinking they might have divorced I wondered how else I could try.
The only other thing I could remember was the name of their first daughter, Susan, so assuming she had retained her father’s surname I tried the schools in the largest Channel Island of Jersey.
Again a shot in the dark but one which switched the light on! It came up with a lady of that name living in America. Oh how times had changed!
I e-mailed her explaining I was looking for Olive and asked whether she was her mother and yes, a reply came back confirming that she was.
Within days Olive and I were back in touch and exchanging forty years’ of information.
Olive was alive and well and now living in Suffolk, in the UK.
I was so pleased I had found her! It prompted me to go through a box of old black and white negatives and one of the photos is of my first son Peter’s christening showing us all there together.
As Peter is now 49 years old we look slightly more mature these days but the passion for football is still as strong as ever! Thanks ever so much for bringing two ‘ole footie’ fans back together!
