St. John's 'brothers' reunited
This month’s STAR STORY is very special indeed. It comes from Andrew Crofts from Victoria in Australia, who with our help, has managed to find a dear friend and ‘lost brother’ from the children’s home he grew up in.
Andrew, now 43, explains:
“I last saw my best mate Robert when I was 15. We were both living in a children’s home called St. John’s. There were several cottages within the institution and Robert and I lived at the Nunawading Cottage in Victoria, Australia. He was like a brother to me.
When I turned fifteen I was moved out of this environment into a hostel where I was trained to support myself, and this was the last I saw of him.
I tried on several occasions to contact Robert and my other former housemates, but contact was not allowed. To this day I don’t understand why, but those were the rules.
Robert was younger than me and so he had to stay on. When I was finally released from my wardship, I tried again to get in touch with him and the others, but they themselves had all moved on; I couldn’t find anyone from the home.
Well quite a few years later when the internet became available to me, I joined every friend-finding site possible, and eventually Robert read my profile on Who-Remembers-Me.com.
He sent me a cryptic message that only I would understand regarding peanut brittle.
Oh my God when I got that message I could have cried. I knew in a heartbeat that it was my mate, the one I had been looking for, for so long. I didn’t sleep at all well that night.
Robert gave me a telephone number but it threw me somewhat as it didn’t look like a number in Australia.
Anyhow, he rang the next day at 2pm and we spoke for hours! We had so much to catch up on; all sorts of news, some great, some not so great. I just wish I could have been there to help him through the bad times.
And the strange number? Well, he had moved from Australia to Holland! I was saddened to learn he had moved overseas as I would have liked to meet up with him, the very next day if possible!
Still I’m so very happy that I’ve found him again. At least we are back in regular contact and one day he says he’ll return to Australia.
Attached is a photo I’ve had with me since the day I left St. John’s. The handsome chap in red is Robert and the more recent photo is of myself and partner Lisa.
Thank you for reuniting two long lost brothers, maybe not biological, but brothers in every other sense.”
